Umair Haque: Recreating Capitalism

Get serious about the issues, ask tough questions, create real value for society as a whole.

Umair Haque is the author of The New Capitalist Manifesto, a strategist, an economist, and the author of my favorite tweet ever. His twitter stream is continuously though-provoking (almost to a point of discomfort) and offers a sobering take on the state of the global economy.

In this video from HBR, Umair discusses recent crisis' that have brought our economy's shortcomings into the spotlight: such as the failure to create new industries and jobs. He also states that as a society we're too familiar with capitalism to change it in a meaningful way. Although he does mention some important changes that are taking place including social entrepreneurship, green business, and community building.

He also talks about what he calls "thick" vs. "thin" value. "Thick" value he says creates authentic, sustainable, and meaningful value, and capitalism hasn't been doing that. The value we thought we were creating was fake and not value that contributes to society past a short period of time. Wall St. is a great example of this he says - as they increased access to credit - which was really the banks just "passing the buck" to society he says.
